It is well established in the literature that proper sleep is simply fundamental for general and brain health, and one of the reasons is that the brain clears out toxins during non-REM sleep, as shown by researchers from Boston. They discovered that during this sleep stage, and after neurons stop firing, blood flow is replaced by cerebrospinal fluid, clearing out metabolic byproducts on its way out.
