Carnitine for Fat Burning During Exercise
I’ve talked about how carnitine can help us to use fat as a source of energy, and researchers from the UK are showing us how important muscle carnitine concentration is for that purpose.
In a randomized clinical trial, they gave the subjects a daily dose of 4.4 grams of L-carnitine tartrate, yielding 3 grams of L-carnitine, for 25 weeks.
After that period, they found that the subjects that received the supplement had a carnitine concentration inside the muscle, 20% higher than the control group. They also found that the group that received the carnitine was able to use 20% more fatty acids during exercise than the control group.
This reinforces the importance of achieving and maintaining high levels of carnitine concentration in the muscles, so your body can use fatty acids during exercise as a source of energy.
